Despite decades of progress with conventional tobacco control policies, commercial tobacco use continues to be the leading cause of preventable disease and death. In response, the public health community is embracing “endgame strategies”—bold, long-term policies designed not merely to manage tobacco use, but to permanently alter the structural, political, and social dynamics that sustain the tobacco epidemic and move toward a tobacco-free future.
New Jersey has a strong track-record of local-level policy-making in tobacco prevention and control. NJ’s cities and counties have led the way in establishing local tobacco retailer licensing systems, Tobacco 21 laws, flavored tobacco sales restrictions, tobacco retailer density and proximity restrictions, and more. Many of these are examples of tobacco “endgame-focused” policies.
This webinar will explore the rationale, policy design, and regulatory considerations of tobacco endgame approaches, as well as tie in examples of endgame-focused policies that have been adopted in New Jersey’s local jurisdictions and in California. Participants will also learn how to anticipate and thoughtfully respond to common industry arguments. The session will also examine equity-centered policy frameworks that ensure endgame strategies help reduce health disparities rather than exacerbate them.
